A warm autumnal day finds Apollo Lunar Module Pilot Fred Haise in
Pontefract, West Yorkshire for the first time. A convivial laid back
guy Fred spoke first to TV news reporters before enthralling local
school children, signing autographs and regaling them with stories of
his adventures.
Later that day Fred recounted his career to a captivated audience of
space enthusiasts rounding off a wonderful evening by patiently
signing autographs for each and every one of the audience…. all 425 of
them!
Unfortunately Fred’s visit will be remembered by many for what
followed. Just 7 days following his visit Carleton Community High
school was raised to the ground by a devastating fire. Trouble it
seems follows Fred wherever he goes.
