Born in the deep south, Fred “Pecky” Haise (it’s a long story) wears his southern “Good ‘ol Boy” persona like a cloak or veneer yet is masks as complex, highly accomplished and successful individual. Throughout the event Fred was relaxed beyond belief and keen to go the extra mile to please everybody who came into contact with him.
Not least the children at Birley Spa Primary school in Sheffield: Fred’s first port of call upon arrival in England. The 5 to 7 year olds took to Fred like he was their grandad! The warmth of Fred’s reception during the entire trip prompted him to say “I wish I could transport 100 million Brits to the US such has been the warmth of the welcome and the interest in our space program.”
